When I taught at Modoc, IN there was a restaurant called the "Blue Moon" that had delicious fish on Friday nights!!!!
In the mid "80's in Missouri or Kentucky there was a Jenny mule that was fertile (could have foals, hybrids 99.9% time are not). She was called Blue Moon.
Sorry to the OP, but that is my contribution to the term, Blue Moon.
