Subject: 1680 Small Wire in Corn??

I upgraded this year from a short shoe 1680 to a long shoe. I am seeing more rotor loss than I would like so I pulled the rear two concaves to remove every other wire and found everything welded up. Meaning the wires are welded in place across the span of the wire and even the retainer plates are welded in place. My first question is, this was never done from the factory I assume and if not why would anyone want to take the time to weld everything together? It's not like the wires are going to go anywhere. At any rate, this brings me to my next question. I now have two sets of small wire concaves sitting in the shed and very rarely plant small grains. Would there be anything wrong with pulling two wires, leaving one, pulling two etc.. and using in corn? I am guessing the main issue would be bending a wire? I have the second set I can keep on hand for small grains if need be as long as the small wire can hold up to the abuse corn will give it.
