Subject: Calves on oats.

Texas
I’m overstocked, but going to ride it out in hopes of getting a place bought. I want to put the calves on creep feed so my cows can graze wheat pasture. Eating Johnson grass and haygrazer now, I think I’ve got it timed where they will have it buzzed in a month and can get moved to wheat for first freeze. I’m going to get a cart load of free oats. They have some age on them and I suspect significant insect damage, but I haven’t seen them.

Can I load a creep feeder and let all the calves have at it free choice cold turkey? Or do I need to wean them on somehow? Calves are 250-600. Still nursing full Time to momma kicking them off.

I have corn, good hay, and can get good oats, cotton seed, gin trash if I need to blend something in.

Some of them will go on feed later for beef and some are for breeding stock it I get the dirt bought.
