This happed to "someone" I know. Back when Illinois had a handgun only season in January. This guy went hunting on a real cold morning, and after not seeing anything started to walk out, on the way out he saw a doe standing in the woods, he fired his 44 magnum and the deer dropped, it was close by so he drug her to the trail and drove his truck in, put tag on her leg and was going to drive home to hang up on tractor to gut it out. About 3 miles down the road, he heard a commotion coming from the back of the truck and looked in the rear view mirror and saw the deer scrambling in the truck bed, he alammed on the brakes and got a crowbar from behind the seat, and smacked it in the head a couple of times, and then cut its throat to bleed it out. When at home hanging on the tractor, no bullet wound could be found, except where there was hair and hide missing on the back of the does head. The bullet had temporarily knocked it out. It was so cold (4 degrees and windy) this guy didn't check the deer when he shot it.
