Subject: RE: Tram line maintenance

Central Iowa
One of the reasons I still ridge till is because "tramline" rutting is much less of an issue. There is enough tillage through cultivation that rutting is mostly prevented. There are exceptions of course, such as where there are areas that need tile which is a whole other issue.

One thing I have been experimenting with is attaching an old NH3 knife behind the sweeps in the wheel tracks on my B & H cultivator to provide a little more aeration in the wheel tracks "tramlines". The results have been positive so far.

On my limited no-till acres I see more tramline rutting but cover crops seem to mitigate the issue somewhat.
