I think it depends more on location & plant pops. We switched to 30" corn in 2009, yields went down about 15 bps, and I'm out costs went up. Switched back to 30 in 2012 and yields jumped back up. Before switching to 20s we were already pushing our pops higher, 39 -40,000. Son was selling seed corn at the time & his agronpmist got his PhD in doing research on plant population & row widths. He said most who claimed higher yields from 20" corn had increased their pops also raised their pops at the same time. His research showed, at least for this area that the yield increase was from increased pops & not the narrower row widths.
FWIW, most of the guys in this area that switched to 20" corn have switched back to 30s.
