Subject: Deere 750 drill with belt meters questionj

Monroe City, Indiana
I have a John Deere 750 no-till drill, 7.5" spacing. I am wanting to sow some cover crops with it. It has the S.I. Distributing belt meters that came with it. While these belt meters are designed for soybeans, and do a pretty good job of simulating, metering cover crop is not the best. The seed chart rate for the belt meters lists soybeans, wheat, oats, and rice at pounds per acre. With the lowest gearing, it is still way to high to get the 10 pounds per acre for annual rye, crimson clover, and radish. I talked to representatives at the farm show and on the phone about this. Was told gears that low are not made.

My idea is to fasten a piece if sheet metal to block off half of the belts. (each belt meter unit has 2 rubber belts) by blocking off roughly half of the opening from the seed hopper to the belts, would that reduce the rate as well? Not looking to be perfect, but don't want to waste seed by over population. Thank you in advance for any ideas.
