Subject: Explain some electrical equipment to me

Morris, IL
Working on grain dryer been causing me fits keeping it running.

How do thermal overloads work exactly? I mean I know they measure electrical flow via heat through strips but do they physically cut power themselves or just tell the magnetic starter to do that job? My magnetic starter melted itself together I think and the motors kept on trucking along. One was burning belts another I’m unsure.

Thing is it shut rest of dryer down like it should so something had to tell dryer I need to stop yet wet augers kept running.
