Cherokee County, Northwest Iowa | These three pictures aren't the clearest, and don't begin to do justice to how low the Little Sioux River is at Cherokee. I have lived here 41 years, maybe the river has been this low before, but I sure don't remember it. I have never seen the rocks in the middle of the river before. Cherokee County is in D1 drought area, area north of here is D2. National Weather Service says river at 6 feet.
For comparision, flood stage is officially 17 feet, the two bridges in town are closed at around 22 feet, and the next closest bridge is underwater at 24 feet.
I remember helping sandbag in July, 1993 when we had a historic "100 year flood" at 27.08 feet. The river has been above 27.00 feet 5 other times: 1965, 2010, 2013, 2018, and 2019.
