I bet WYDave knows about 10x more about this than me, but I would say that the only reason wood will crack (shy of a massive smack) is if it is dry. If you take the stock and forearm off and oil the heck out of it (you have to soak it into the unfinished parts as not much gets through the outter finish, my opinion is you can't have too much) it will last forever. Oiled wood basically can't deteriorate. Old, oiled wood will darken, just more beautiful imho. Oil it early, oil it often, just like greasing the swather.
