Coastal South Carolina | I sell 20 acres a year. It is a lot of physical work. It works best to "pick" around 18% to cut down on shelling. I usually start picking around 22-23% (Mid August) and pick as needed down to 14-15%(usually Nov). It WILL spoil in humid climates if picked to wet and piled without ventilation. If picked and bagged rats love it. Elavators, pallets and shrink wrap are your friends.
Edit: it is labor intensive and a strong back is needed. I have watched some of the same pickers sell 3 and 4 times on Craigslist and auctions. Everyone thinks they will get rich with it. They buy the equipment this year and sell it next.
