I would use any type wood when I used a wood furnace. I burned some walnut. It made decent heat but put out a lot of smoke. I didn't really like oak because the bark would get wet and stay wet or fall off and make a mess. My favorite firewood is black locust. There are a lot of black locust here and the ones without thorns are the ones to cut.
