Subject: RE: what makes good fire wood

South Central MN
Ash does pretty good as fire wood, but double check if that emerald ash borer is around and/or the county you or the wood is in is quarantined for it. Not supposed to transport ash firewood long distances because of it, and some places won't let any be brought in. If it is the guy next door probably no big deal but a couple counties away might be.

Oak and walnut should be good unless it couldn't dry out and started to rot. No experience with sweet gum.

If it has been laying for a few years, been able to dry out after a rain most of it should be good but check whatever is in the middle of the pile and laying on the ground as that might be going bad.
