They didn't break with tradition. A Supreme Court nominee hasn't been approved in an election year when the Senate is a different party than the President since the 1880's. On the other hand, they have been approved several times in an election year when both are of the same party. I just did a little research, 1888 was the last time it happened under Grover Cleveland.
