Short answer: Because they can. If you can't live without it they can, and will, charge whatever they feel is "fair" to get it back up and running.

A lot of the electrical/computer side of equipment is proprietary to the company that made the machine, especially if it is JD. They don't want anyone else working on it, mainly because they are able to charge more if no one else can. Now if smaller independent shops could do the same work for 1/3 less cost, then they wouldn't make as big of a profit. Never mind that some computer stuff can really mess things up if done incorrectly.

Ever notice that new equipment sold to 2nd and 3rd world countries have all the modern mechanical components (other than some fancy option parts) but are a lot like a late 80's early 90's machine electrically? They know they don't have good dealer support in those markets and often the farmer or independent mechanic will be working on it. Better to have something that works and doesn't need anything fancy. A little digging and you can find out the model numbers are quite different on that equipment, and "here" you never know they exist.
