Subject: WWI German pistol came back home

Kingdom of Callaway - Fulton, Mo 65251
Long story, so bear with me....

In 2000, my aunt and uncle's house was robbed. He was brush mowing behind the house, and she was in her wheelchair reading. They kicked in the door, so she hid in a bathroom while they went straight to his gun cabinet and stole what they could carry.

A few months later, they were caught after a string of similar robberies. They returned several guns, and the police were able to track down later all but two pistols. One was a cheapo throw away, but the other one was one of my favorites. My uncle taught me pistol safety with it as a boy in the 1970's.

In WWI, a local attorney was a lieutenant in the army fighting in France. He and his men slipped into a German occupied town and surprised the garrison while they slept. He took a pistol off the German commander while he was still in his bathrobe. He was involved in a lot of fighting, and when the war ended, he brought the pistol back with him.

He went to work for his Uncle's law practice, and my great-aunt was his secretary. She never married, and worked for him for 60 something years. He knew her nephew (my uncle) liked guns, so he gave him the German pistol. This was the pistol that was still missing after being stolen from my uncle in 2000.

So a few weeks ago, my uncle reads in the local paper that one of the dirt-bags that robbed him was arrested again with a pistol in his possession. My 93 year old Uncle Forrest went to the police with the serial number of the missing pistol to see if it was his. It wasn't, but the policeman ran it through a national database, and it popped up as being held as evidence in Kansas! The policeman hopped in his car, drove to Kansas, and brought it back!

On a side note, this attorney was a really generous man. When local folks needed a house, he would loan them money at a low interest rate when the banks turned them down. At some point, my great aunt took over the book keeping of it, and the daily operation of their little bank. It grew and grew, and in the 1960's became a official building and loan. They helped a lot of folks.

The lieutenant kept a diary while in France, and the local historical society published a book of his exploits and it's really a neat story.

We are really tickled to get the gun back.
