Agree with you timebandit. It only takes a quick check by comparing the moisture in an openly bare spot vs. kicking residue off a spot & seeing how much wetter it actually is underneath the trash. Bare soil, in our area, continually wicks moisture into the atmosphere. I'd say 2-3" difference, easily. In an environment receiving only 12-15" annually, that's a substantial amount. High surface soil temperature is also a factor, with bare spots reading greater than 140 degrees during hot spells.
