Well how do you grow it in the first place? Chop the roots and replant?
It will come back year after year here. The oldest field I know of was planted in the 70's. One field my grandfather had still has a little around the edges from his initial planting in the early 60's, but the field itself has been rotated to other crops. It's usually harvested on a two year schedule here, although at times it's harvested every year depending on what the markets after. We always tried to leave as much as possible for two year old, and I've also seen 3 year old dug.
To initially plant it, yes you use a root segment. The initial harvest is going to be some wonky looking roots where it grows off of that piece, but after that it comes back from the roots below the digging depth, which is 12-14". | |
