If you plug the center hole and fill through the small outside holes it will be filtered

X2. That's what I do if feasible, especially on oil filters. Nothing unfiltered that way.

On JD common rail fuel systems, I don't prefill. After installing the new fuel filters, I turn the key on, and find something else to do for several minutes. The electric supply pump will purge all the air out, and it will start and run like normal. No need to open any bleed screws.

Not all of the older fuel systems purge easily like that. One exception would be the older Deere tractors with the Bosch type inline injector pumps. The hand primer on them will purge all the air out if you pump it enough. No need to crack any bleed screws open.
