I am spitting in the dark because I do not know what you mean by reset but if I am guessing your system is older and built to NEMA standards instead of IEC standards. NEMA is going to have Class III fuses, feeding a contactor, feeding a non-resettable overload, feeding the motor. IEC can have Class III fuses OR a resettable thermal disconnect, feeding an IEC contactor/resettable overload relay combo, feeding the motor. Both work and have their place. NEMA required everything be sized right but provides more solid protection for the motor. If your load varies a lot an IEC style system is more forgiving but can be hell on the motor.
