Subject: RE: Soybean Population

Brookston, IN
We have a sand ridge across one of our fields. In the good part of that field I planted 75k on 20” rows, going up over the sand ridge I increased them to 120k. The last time the field was in beans I planted flat rate strips across the the sand ridge and was at 150 across the ridge on my Rx areas. I saw very little yield difference down to 90k in the strips, however weeds be came more prevalent below 120k so I dropped to 120k for 2020. The 80k strip over the sand ridge grew as many beans as the higher pops but they went under the cutter bar so the harvested yield was lower. I would guess dropping to 30k on your sand wouldn’t work out the best but dropping back some may not be a bad idea.
