Sheep will clean it up pretty well too. I didn't have an abnormally high amount of harvest loss in recent years, but it's always more than zero. Where I have run ewes on stalks over the winter I have to walk out no more than one volunteer corn plant per 5 acres in my organic soybeans.

Do you run a protective animal with your sheep, or do you not have a high coyote population in your area?

I use electrified netting during the part of the year that lambs are running with them. Two strands of electric when it is just mature ewes on stalks. I'll see coyote tracks in the snow where they are grazing. Not a huge population, but there are some. Domestic dogs that "wouldn't hurt anyone," but are left free to wander are a bigger concern to me.
