NW Washington
It might be a here and there thing, but fertilizer placement trials on soft white winter wheat behind peas or lentils in the Palouse hills in Eastern Washington and N Idaho never showed any benefit to where the fertilizer was placed with respect to the seed. Fertilizer placement in this area was a big new idea back about 40 years ago when the Yielder no-till drill came out, so we ran plot trials for seven years and never saw any advantage to fertilizer placement other than you can screw up germination if you put too much N or S in the row which we already knew.
