Yes there can be some problems with having fields bedded. One thing is the need for water furrows across beds. Even though my fields are precision graded and fall from the high point to the low point being the end on the field and the beds I need a water furrow across those beds on the low end of the field. So if you bed fields with low spots in them you will need water furrows across the beds. Those water furrows need to be in the right place to keep water from holding. Not like in a flat field where if you had a wet spot you would just work around it and come back later after it dried up. I don't normally tear my old beds out but will just bed directly over them. That means you are planting back directly into last years stubble. I did notill a good bit of the crop this year on last years beds without running the furrows out and for the most part those fields seemed to water good. We did have good rainfall events during the growing season that tend to cover up when you are not doing a great job with your irrigation. One thing I did notice comparing the notill to where I rebedded and drug off with a do-all is I had better weed control on the worked ground compared to the notill using the same spray program. So much of what I do and how I do it is about being able to furrow irrigate. |
