western iowa,by Denison
from the seat of the chopper and using hand check over 1,000's of acres the 3.5 inchs of rain on my 1/2 black layer corn will keep me at that level for 10-15 more days of green corn silage chopping-on the 218 bushel appraisal it will add 20+ bushel on hand appraisal or 220 bushel corn will be 240-the corn is very green-for anyone silage chopping it has added to the bottom line hugely over the 95-100 degree weather that was flash drying as we opened the fields.
Yes the late rain was very helpful on green corn-on dry out spots-it will hold moisture on those ears a few more days but maybe only 1-2% increase in weight vs the green corn that easily adds 10%
the top green leaves keep adding to the plant-Ideally the leaves stay green long into almost first hard freeze day-they are green to keep feeding the plant
