NE Iowa | In January '97 I had one semester of college left and a job lined up starting in June back in my hometown. Was home for Christmas and older neighbor approached me about renting half of his farm. 300 acres on the Mississippi river bluff with about 140 acres tillable. I rented half the first couple years and then rented it all for a while. It is a beautiful scenic farm but a major pain to farm. Scary steep in places. The type of farm where the PTO stops running because it is starved for oil because it is so off level. You occasionally would see air under the uphill combine tire. Front end of tractor came off the ground only pulling a 9' moco while cutting uphill once. Before I rented this farm I had $20,000 in the bank and no student loans and only one semester of college left. By the time I graduated 5 months later I had nothing left in the bank because I had spent it all on fertilizer, seed, and a few bred cows.
