| Thiosulfate ions contain 2 S atoms which have different oxidation states. One of the S atoms is already fully oxidized whereas the other is not.
The fully oxidized S atom in thiosulfate is available for uptake almost immediately whereas the other S atom needs to go through a microbially mediated oxidation process before it can be taken up by plants.
Elemental S ALSO needs to go through a microbially mediated oxidation process before it is available for uptake by plants BUT the slowly available S in thiosulfate is NOT actually elemental S.
Elemental S takes months to years to become plant available (depending on particle size and environmental conditions).
The slowly available S in thiosulfate takes weeks to over a month to become plant available (depending on environmental conditions).
