| All we need to bring down hydrogen is a "remember the Hindenburg" campaign. Of course no one under the age of 92 would have any idea what the hindenburg was.
There are lots of ways to do fuel cells and surely ethanol could play a role, but we're still talking energy per unit volume and efficiency. We like gasoline because after 5 minutes of filling, we can drive 300-500 miles. Lots of energy in a gallon of gas and not so much with ethanol. If we are talking about strictly short commutes, it's hard to not just go all electric and kick the battery life and disposal can down the road.
Another issue is whether or not we stop thinking C02 is a pollutant when plant life on earth would die without it. Certainly burning strait ethanol would have better emissions (far less complex fuel), but still result in CO2 and water.
There is talk of a nuclear battery that holds a charge for 20K years and something like that could eliminate the need for any fuel burning. Of course, even though it's a small amount of nuclear material, it's not friendly to living things.
So, we are left with growing grain for food and various materials. Perhaps that will be the market signal we finally listen to. | |
