In my experience I'm not sure it's even necessary to work the rye in. Everywhere we have spread it the last couple of years has grown just fine by planting time. I spring strip tilled and planted soys into the rye covers. If the rye got very far along the strips were lumpy. Planting soys directly into the rye cover and terminating after planting worked better for me.

Still experimenting with rates, different species, termination, etc.
