Two main basics for soil health/fertility. 1. Always apply more or at least as much nutrients as removed. 2. Work some of the organic material back into the soil. Most organic material will help the soil more if mixed in with it. Top soil depth will increase faster if the organic is moved down. If you have 12 inches of 3-5% organic soil instead of 6 you will have more water retention and less nutrients lost through tile water. Also deep ripping will allow more more roots to go deeper and put more organic material lower and allow more water to be absorbed into the ground and retained by the organic matter there.
