Here I prefer to plant (with JD no-till drill) and then terminate the rye. I am always afraid that if I kill the rye and it gets wet the ground will never dry out. This could be avoided if the rye is terminated when it is only a few inches tall, but in my mind that negates a lot of the benefits of the rye. My rey is usually headed out and 5-6' tall when I drill beans into it. I terminated it a day or two after planting. There are a few miles between your location and mine though. Patrick
