Subject: Calculating kernels per bu from a hand sample?

East Central Ia
Trying to get an estimate on a field of corn.

103 day planted 4/21.

Got torn up by the storm but mostly root lodging and willowing.

I grabbed twi ears off of plants that are standing decent and still green trying to get a guess on the highest moisture areas for harvest timing.

Ear one 33x16
8.8oz of shelled corn
Ear two 42x16
8.7oz of shelled corn

1200 total kernels
17.5oz total

So I get 68.57 kernels per oz
1097 kernels per pound
61440 kernels per bu

These are all wet numbers

Ave moisture of 26.8%
1.176 moisture shrink per pt to 15%

26.8-15 = 11.8 x 1.176 = 13.88% shrink

100-13.88 = 86.12%

61450/.8612 = 71,358 kernels per bu dry?

This seems awfully low considering our growing season finish. This would be close to normal for us with a good growing season.

What did I screw up?
