A old seed man once told me to put wheat with the alfalfa to act as a cover crop. it is the early spring temps that cause failure of the alfalfa. the wheat keeps ground temp lower to keep alfalfa from greening too early and hurting it from freezing and thawing. I believe it was only 30 pounds per acre. Really had a good stand the following summer.
