I have found with all my neighbors, the good and the bad, that the best solution is to push everything out really wide and split the total cost. Everyone benefits, and your additional expense paying for half of his tree removal will be long forgotten over the years as you benefit from a longer life fence.

If it is a issue, I tend to just pile everything on my side of the new fence if that is what it takes to push it all out wide. It's hard for a neighbor to argue when you allow that. Time takes care of such things.
