Subject: Disappointing gains

Southern Indiana
I've had 2 steers and 3 heifers on feed this summer for the freezer. Not so concerned with their final weight as their rate of gain. Weighed on May 26 and then on Aug 31. Best gain was 3#/day, poorest was 1.75, rest was around 2.5#/day. Gradually got them up to 20 to 24# of 14# ground corn, where they've been for about a month and about 5# of hay (timothy).
I was hoping for a 3#/ day gain. At this rate with purchased grain I'm trading dollars. I've priced them at 1.50/# live weight on delivery to the processor and buyer pays the processor.
Suggestions?
