| To get to 600 bu. per trip and be legal on weight, you might need to go alum. bed vs. a steel bed, steel wheels, fuel tanks, etc. all add wt. With a steel bed on a tandem, 550-570 bu. avg. per trip might be closer to what you could expect to avg., but that's in Illinois with our wt. limits. Don't know what yours are.
Diesel and air brakes are great advice already given. Find out what the empty wt. of the truck is. Having a bigger fuel tank can save refilling as often, but can also had some weight.
Just sold my old tandem grain truck and bought what for me will be an upgrade, so right now feel I have a pretty good pulse on prices after searching for a couple months. With some luck and persistence, you might find a decent running diesel, air, alum. bed for around $10k, but many or most will be about twice that or more. Can be some regional differences in prices also. If you're a good mechanic willing to go steel and closer to 550 bu./trip, finding a decent $5000 tandem isn't impossible. | |
