North Central Illinois | With soybeans it is pretty much always a guess. I am not methodical enough to go out and take precise samples at equal distances while counting pods and trying to adjust for what I perceive to be the size of the beans. I have seen some awful looking beans yield 60 bushel and I have seen some great looking beans struggle to make 50. I've also had beans that I thought would make mid 60's make close to 80. I looked at a few beans yesterday that are just starting to turn. Some of it is natural and some of it is because they are out of gas moisture wise. I was surprised how well the pods were filled but I fear we aborted a lot of pods that came with new growth early in August but didn't get enough moisture to survive. My guess is we see a lot of 45 to 65 bushel beans. I know that is a wide range but that's the best I can do. I can almost always scout a corn field and come within 10 bushel of what the field will make but beans are a total crapshoot. | |
