The point is you need a certain amount of dispatchable generation regardless, due to renewables being intermittent suppliers of power. EVs will allow utilities to get more efficient use of their plant capacity. As it is now many plants are throttled at night. This is obviously less efficient, no different than running a class 9 combine with a six row head for 1/3rd of the day. Utilities have to have capacity to meet the absolute peak demand, and this means they have historically had way too much capacity off peak. EVs can help alleviate this to some extent and that will be much more efficient.

Also, regarding fuel energy replaced by generation power... There really is no comparison to the efficiency of a currently grid fed EV and a internal combustion engine vehicle. Power plants are designed to provide the most efficient output without regard to drivability etc like a car has to contend with. Gas powered vehicles spend too much time at way less than maximum efficiency. The efficiency of a CC nat gas plant is approaching 60%. A gas powered car is lucky to be 20% thermal efficient.
