Texas/New Mexico Stateline | It has been very hot and dry this summer. We've had many days over 100F and pretty much constantly above 90F every afternoon since June 1st. We got a few showers around July 4th and I was able to get some sorghum planted for feed. I had a neighbor that has been putting it up as silage. With very little rain since then, and none the past 30 days to speak of it finally ran out of gas. Made about 4.9 ton/acre, which I was pleased with. Normal year we could expect 8-10 ton for one cutting on dryland sorghum like this.
They use a swather with a merger under the belly to put three passes into one before picking it up.
I had another field that is about waist high that I intended to sell as feed also, but looks like we will bale a little and test for nitrates, and the rest will get grazed by cows maybe this winter.
