I'm sure it has to come off. I'm surprised that the barrel even pulled out like it did without taking off a snap ring from the other side.
I'm thinking you'll find a spring and the retaining ring inside there. I remember now it's actually a coiled ring instead of a snap ring. It's a bit of a tricky dick to compress that spring and put the retaining ring back on.
Anyone replaced the breakaway coupler in a 7000 series Deere.
