I planted Japanese millet 10 days ago in some drowned out areas. I would not be afraid to plant it in the next couple days, just plan on having it hayed off by Sept 15th and seed your rye then. The downside is you will lose some yield, but it will still be a lot more than seeding rye now.

A lot of rye goes in behind manure application following silage on dairies around here in mid September. You just need to make sure it germinates before the ground gets too cold.
