The B29s had a big wing spar across the middle, dividing the space into two bomb bays. Neither one was big enough to hold the atomic bomb, therefore the plan was to use Lancaster bombers. The US Army Air Force deemed that unacceptable and a massive redesign of the B29s was ordered to accommodate the large bombs.
