My dad too was fighting in the Pacific and had learned well that there was no surrender plan by the Japanese. He was very grateful for that bomb, end explained how the planned push toward the mainland of Japan would have cost countless more lives lost from both sides. Most of my sources over the years agree as horrific as that is, it spared far more than not using it. Historians seem to forget that we gave the Japanese a chance to surrender before it was dropped, then again days later before the second one was dropped. It was only after bomb #2 that they agreed to stop the war.

Those memories were very long lived for my dad. In the 1990's he bought a Honda car his second wife really liked. The few times when I was in it with him he'd shake his head and say I can't believe I bought a car from the same people that were trying to kill me.
