CNY | Civilian bombing probably is seldom if ever justified in light of history and what we are seeing today in Syria and Yemen. But the thinking in WWII and earlier, Spanish civil war and WWI German bombing Britain from Zeppelins, was that bombing civilians would break their will to fight. But it only stiffened the resolve of most to carry on. So much civilian bombing didn't get the desired results. Reminds me of the part in Fury, when in the closing days of the war a worn out field officer is giving orders to the Brad Pitt character and says "Why the Hell don't they just quit?", Pitt replies "Would you?". Much or most of Japan's military were willing fight on "to the last man". But Hirohito was considered a living god so had the last word. | |
