Subject: Milking a cucumber

Pontiac, IL.
It's cucumber season, and last night when my sister was fixing a cucumber salad, she sliced the end slice off the cucumber and rubbed (in a circle) the slice on the remaining cucumber.,(milked it) A milky substance formed on the end, which she cut off and threw away. This "supposedly" takes the bitterness out of the cucumber. Anyone else heard of this? Or is this a "Croation" thing. My mother and grandmother were of Croation decent.
