We hear this almost every year, told it’ll be a short crop because of below average rain, It’s ok now but one more week and it’s toast, then at harvest we get reports of “better than expected.” I’ll believe these maps more than a lot of what we read on here, track record proves it. Heck, I’m seeing corn ears being posted on twitter boasting huge kernel counts in the dry areas and other areas that were screaming in June.

None the less, the map is for the root zone, down to a meter I believe, not the top handful of inches folks typically look at. While I’m sure it isn’t perfect, I bet it’s closer than most will know or want to admit. Much of the belt went into this year with a full profile and it takes a while for all that moisture to go away.
