Nw Iowa | One other issue is valuing labor as talked about above. I found that a good carpenter could do things twice as fast as I could and do it better. For instance framing is not that expensive if you get a few bids you will know what true cost is. Here in MN code changes every couple of yrs with some being stupid but a lot of good long term energy savings due to new methods or new materials that if contractor has a license ,he has had education on. So you get some knowledge besides skill. I have learned from experience what I am saving on in one area could cost me somewhere else. If your corn yields 5 bu less because you did not put full time in because you were busy building, 5 bu on say 500 acres could be 15-20000. That alone could frame up a normal home.
