Subject: RE: What to do with orphan calf

Bremen, KS
Bull or heifer? Is the other "twin" the opposite sex? If both are heifers I'd raise it if in need of replacements. If opposite and the orphan is a heifer it's probably too early to tell if she is a free martin.

Last year the very first heifer that calved would not claim her calf. No way, no how. We kept them together for almost three weeks and my brother force fed the calf from her by putting her in the squeeze chute. Sold the cow and let the calf run with the herd and bottle fed it for a few weeks until it was evident she was getting plenty of milk elsewhere. She didn't lose any ground and is with the other 2021 replacements.
