Central Alberta | I am without fear about our planet running out of food. Food surpluses have always been the biggest problem for the agrifood companies I worked with throughout my career. How to fiddle with supply and demand to create a shortage, so that prices can go up? Farmers and government try to help too by paying farmers not to grow crops and marketing boards who corner the available supply, calling it "supply management." So often they fail and the result is cheap food at the supermarket. From a loaf of bread the farmer makes ten cents, and the processors make the other 3 bucks. Everybody wins.
Starvation can still happen but it's usually because of bad politics. | |
