East Central SD
Good afternoon everyone,
As many of you may remember, 4 and a half years ago i asked for prayers for my wife, Amy, who had a stroke. I'm happy to report that she is doing great!

However, it is with some appreciation that I'm back humbly asking for prayers, this time for myself. On June 30th, I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. I am 41 years old, and had a perfect colonoscopy one year ago at age 40. This bugger came on hard and fast this spring. I had some GI issues this spring, and all signs pointed to IBS or Crohns. It turned out to be a tumor in my lower colon. While one can always wish it had been found sooner, I thank God that we didn't give up pursuing it.
It has grown through the wall of my colon, and I have one suspicious lymph node on the scans. Do to its location, they can't tell if its cancerous or not, but we are treating it as if it is. I begin 8 rounds (4 months) of chemo a week from tomorrow, then more than likely 6 weeks of radiation. Then 10 weeks later i will have surgery to remove whatever is left.

I share my story for 2 reasons, first, to encourage everyone to get a colonoscopy on time. Yes, the prep sucks, but not nearly as much as what I've gone through the last few weeks. Secondly, I believe in the power of prayer, and if any of you have a moment in their day to send up a quick one for me, I will forever be grateful. I would also like to thank the few of you that already know and have shared thoughts and prayers with me.

I have an excellent team of specialists at Avera in Sioux Falls who already make me fell as if I'm their only patient. I have faith that we'll beat this, and I'm ready for the fight. Hug your family close tonight, and keep your priorities straight.

Thanks,
Erik
